GTO Launch Set up of Global Technology and Operations Organization for Styrolution

Styrolution, a German global styrenics supplier, is the product of a strategic joint venture between BASF and INEOS combining the key styernics assets of the two companies. With 3.400 employees, the company provides its products for a broad range of industries such as automotive, building & construction, healthcare & diagnostics and many others, resulting in a consolidated turnover of 6.4 Billion Euros. In order to be effective and become more efficient in combining both operations, a new GTO (Global Technology and Operations) structure needed to be created.


Project challenge

The main target of the OpEx project was to help deliver sustainable process improvements on the different sites using the best practice transfer and synergies across sites whilst expanding the focus on site infrastructure processes.

The key themes were therefore:

  • Optimize existing processes and introduce improved processes & working methods with additional know-how
  • Realize synergies at site and regional level
  • Set up effective pre-preparation in order to reduce inconvenience for the sites by avoiding repeated data requests, and adjust the approach in line with each specific situation

The definition of the appropriate Site Diagnostics Process needed to be developed as main deliverable for PDM. The diagnostics methodology was therefore to be developed as a broad project that covered sites technologies.

Expectations conditional to success

The development of the transformation path for the new GTO organization was to be linked with a screening for first optimization potentials within a very short period of time (3 months) based on an approved and tested approach.

  1. Necessary contribution to joint venture synergy harvest (short term)
  2. Profound basis for GTO-wide optimization, best practice sharing & streamlining (mid term)

The PDM support should lead to an Organizational vision for GTO.


Through site visits, analysis of data that was available and a workshop structure. All relevant key players were involved in delivering the Site Diagnostics Methodology.

The main deliverables covering 6 modules were defined with the appropriate guidelines:

  • Site Diagnostic Process including training material for utilisation including input for resource assessment
  • The required communication material and diagnostics templates
  • Site diagnostics results, reports and documentation

During the cooperation with PDM and 3con, I have been impressed by the knowledge and experience that exist within both companies. Following the methodology, GTO will conduct various site diagnostics in the coming year, and we are confident that they will provide us with the detailed information level required to identify the major improvement and synergy measures.
